Ensure it has enough pages to last you for several months or even a year. I’ve always preferred to go with the dotted journals, but I’ve used lined ones as well! I would also recommend finding one with thick pages so ink or highlighters don’t bleed through.
Create Key and Index Pages: Dedicate the first few pages of your journal to create a key, which is a system of symbols that will represent different types of tasks or events. Additionally, set aside a page or two for the index, where you can reference the various sections of your journal. If you want to go another step further, you can also number each page in your bullet journal so your index can be more specific! Some journals come with numbers already, so that’s another journal addition you might look out for when trying to find one that works for you.
Monthly and Weekly Spreads: Divide your journal into monthly and weekly spreads. Use the monthly spread to capture an overview of the month, including important dates, deadlines, and goals. The weekly spreads allow you to break down your tasks for each day, helping you to stay focused and organized. I’ve tried doing daily spreads in the past, but found that it simply requires too much upkeep. Weekly and monthly spreads give you enough space for information and planning without any overwhelm.
Daily Logging: Begin each day by logging your tasks and events using short, concise entries. Utilize different bullet symbols to signify the status of each task, such as tasks completed, postponed, or migrated to a future date. I use daily logging within my weekly spread! This also helps me stay in the know about what’s coming up in the week without needed to flip any pages.
